The most important cultural festival on the Chinese calendar

18th February 2021

The most important cultural festival on the Chinese calendar and welcomes a brand new lunar year with ancient traditions, rituals and ceremonies faithfully observed to bring new luck and good fortune for the future. It's a spectacular experience of joy and colour and great for kids.

It's a special time comparable to Christmas on the Asian calendar, with more than a million Australians, mostly from the Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities, coming together to celebrate their cultures and traditions.

Dazzling performances, exquisite clothing from an array of ancient dynasties, traditional Chinese cuisine, fantastic light show performance and a slew of Chinese cultural activities available for all ages will set the tone for a prosperous year ahead.

Delicious food, wonderful music and spectacular entertainment, including the ever-popular crowd-weaving Dragon Dancers will bring the city to life with people, colour, movement and sound.

This year the celebrations kick off in February with a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and events throughout the Street Party. The Lunar New Year Street Party will be held on February 20 from 11:30am to 9:30pm at the city's Chinatown precinct near Gouger Street.

Enjoy Chinese cultural performances to welcome the Year of the Ox.
